The Risks of Liposuction

While the cosmetic surgery procedure of liposuction can do wonders to a person’s appearance and self esteem, it is very important to acknowledge that the liposuction procedure does carry some risks.

Before you become too scared though, let’s us acknowledge that any medical procedure has its own inherent risks.  These risks will either be magnified or lessened by the type of anesthesia used.  As an example, a medical procedure that uses local anesthesia will be less prone to severe risks than a procedure that uses general anesthesia.

With that said, let’s examine three of the potential complications that can occur from having liposuction.

The most common (as well as insidious) complication is infection.  Any time a patient’s skin is broken, a possibility exists for infection to arise.  Therefore, it is very important for a lipo patient to follow his or her doctor’s instructions on keeping the area that was operated clean.  Additionally, the patient’s surgeon may prescribe antibiotics to combat the risk of infection developing.

The next side effect that you should know about (albeit it is rare) is the fact that the Lidocaine used during tumescent liposuction Dallas can lead to a patient’s heart stopping.  Of course, regardless of the medical procedure you are undergoing, if Lidocaine is being used, this complication could occur.

The last potential complication that we will discuss today is when the patient develops a fluid imbalance.  This situation can also result in either kidney or heart problems.

At this point, you may be thinking that this procedure is way too dangerous to undergo.  However, we simply believe you should be aware of the dangers that could potentially arise during a liposuction.  In all reality, the odds of a severe complication occurring isn’t that great.  In fact, the US Food and Drug Administration states that only 3 people in 100,000 are likely to die from this procedure.
