Natural Antibiotics
It seems that the use of antibiotics has become over-prescribed. Overuse of these meds will cause our bodies to have an imbalance of good and bad bacteria. This can lead to candida and fungi infections that are very difficult to remedy. We lose our bodies natural ability to fight disease by this imbalance. Of course there are times when a pharmaceutical antibiotic is appropriate and can save a life, but it’s best not to jump on the band wagon everytime you get a sore throat or cold. There are some very good natural alternatives to antibiotics that work just as well, if not better than a prescription.
- The best defense is to keep your immune system in tip top shape. Be sure your body has adequate supplies of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is fundamental in fighting off disease, inflamation and cancer. 10 minutes of sunshine a day is the best way to give your body vitamin D. If that is not possible, sardines are a rich natural source of calcium and vitamin D. Of course not everyone likes sardines, so supplementation is also good. Researchers are finding that 2300mg of vitamin D a day is what our bodies truly need to stay healthy, instead of the old RDA of 200mg. It is best to have your doctor take a blood test to check your vitamin D levels and go from there. Too much vitamin D is not good either.
- The best natural antibiotic is garlic. Besides it’s fragrant aroma and delicious taste, garlic is a powerful natural antibiotic. Garlic’s broad spectrum antifungal and antibiotic effect comes from the chemical allicin, which is released when it is crushed or chopped. Allicin is garlic’s defense to keep predators from chewing on the plant. Using garlic as a natural antibiotic was proven to be effective by Loius Pastuer, but it’s been around since ancient Greece curing everything from gangrene to bronchitis. Garlic is most effective raw and loses it’s antibiotic potency when cooked. My favorite way to eat garlic is to chop up a couple cloves, pour extra-virgin olive oil on it, sprinkle with salt and eat it with your favorite bread. If your afraid to have garlic breath, you can also take garlic capsules.
