Kids Nutrition Comes First
When determining what is proper for our children to be eating it is important to remember that the foods our children eat goes a long ways to determining their mood and how they will act during the day. It is difficult to get our children to eat well but it is as important to their well-being and growth as is helping them to learn to read or develop motor skills. Studies have shown that if they do not eat well, the ability to develop in the other areas is diminished.
Since the health of the family is the number one concern that we have, it is very important and crucial that we do everything we can to monitor and encourage the proper eating habits of our family.
Scientists are proving that what is in the foods we eat can effect the chemical makeup of your brain. The foods you eat can determine the level of alertness, your mood, and your perception of pain.
Foods carry within them the nutrients for our bodies and all the way down to our individual cells. They carry these nutrients to our brain and affect the neurotransmitters that are responsible for sending messages throughout the body such as “I’m full” or “I am grumpy”.
According to Dr. Richard Wutman at MIT, who is involved in the study of nutrition and the brain, the nutrients in the foods we eat are precursors to neurotransmitters and depending on the amount of precursors in the foods we eat, the more or less of a certain precursor is developed. It becomes more complicated when you consider the number of different nutrients in the foods that are eaten.
Some things to remember when determining the foods to eat. Protein will boost the alertness in our brains. One amino acid, called tyrosine has been found to increase the levels of dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine which increase the level of energy we have. High protein foods include fish, poultry, meat and eggs.
To relax and fight stress, eat carbohydrates. Eating carbohydrates triggers the release of insulin into our bloodstream. Through a chemical process, insulin reduces other amino acids and clears the way for a chemical known as tryptophan to be dominant. This chemical is converted to serotonin once it enters the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that has the effect of reducing pain, decreasing appetite, and inducing a calm state of mind. High carbohydrates foods include grain foods, rice, cereal, and fruits.
The consumption of sugar is never a good idea. We should do everything we can to decrease or eliminate the consumption of sugar in our families. Some practitioners feel that elimination of sugar should be close to our number one priority. The eating of wholesome foods such as fruits, peppers, broccoli, and oily fish will serve to improve our memory.
So if we want to have our children develop properly and do well in school, lets do everything we can to see that they get a balanced diet which includes all the foods that are good for us.
