Is there a treatment for Hypnagogia?
In a normal situation people will not start hallucinating until they are on drugs or having a serious psychosis. There is some kind of relation between hallucinations and dreaming because the thing you are experiencing are much the same. But hallucinations in real life can be quite scary because you know you are not dreaming but completely awake. Drugs or psychosis are not the only conditions where you are able to have hallucinations. Almost 40% will experience hypnagogia in their lives and almost 5% will experience this frequently and some of them also very intense. Hypnagogia is a condition where people are having hallucinations just after waking up, but because you are not completely awake you experience your dreamworld as it would be real life. Sometimes this could be a cool experience, but most often it is rather scary.
The instant moment your body falls asleep it will disconnect any motor senses that are connected to your brain. If it would not do this than you would make all the movements that you are making in your dreams. Because it is not in the best interest of human kind to wake up on another place than where we fall asleep, the human body disconnects the motor skills. When you wake up everything will be back to normal and you will be able to move everything again. But when you are in a state of hypnagogia you are not able to move and you think you are awake. Sleep paralysis is frequently seen as a symptom of Narcolepsy and can indeed be very frightful because you truly think you have no control over your body anymore. Some people think they are going insane and freak out so you see, this disorder is not that innocent.
Is there some kind of Hypnagogia treatment? There is no psychological therapy or any medication that will help you get rid of hypnagogia, but a psychologist might help you to snip out of it. He will help you to concentrate on a small limb like your finger or toe and try to move it. The moment you are able to move your finger your entire body will also awake again.
