Cough Remedies

With all the scare about over the counter cough syrups for children I was determined to find a natural cough remedy that would work for my son. When he has just a little cough, I give him a tablespoon of local honey. Amazingly, the honey not only stops the cough for a bit, it also puts him to sleep! It’s a perfect cough remedy for right before bedtime. It works so well, I tried it myself to help me just fall asleep when I can’t and it works great! Not only a great cough remedy, it’s also a great remedy for insomnia.
Another really good natural cough remedy is 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon honey and about 1/4 glass warm water. This one is a little bit harder to get my son to drink, but it works great. You can also mix the apple cider vinegar with some apple juice and it’ll work just as well.
A cough, also known as tussis, is a spasmodic contraction of the thoracic cavity. I suppose the honey works so well because something in it relaxes the thoracic cavity. Our pediatrician said the coughing is not bad for him at all, in fact you want the body to get rid of the irritating substances in the passageway. She said it’s harder for the adults to hear and in fact she’s right. My husband and I cringe when we hear our little guy cough. But at bedtime, it’s hard for him to fall asleep if he’s coughing so hard. Thank God for honey, it’s good for so many ailments.
Another home remedy for coughs that I haven’t tried yet, but I hear it works pretty good, is onions. Chop up a small onion and sprinkle a tablespoon of sugar on it. Cover it and put it in the refrigerator for 45 minutes. The sugar will draw out the syrup from the onion. Take a dropper full of the syrupy sugar and give it to your child. It tastes like sugar so they will like it. This will clear their chests and help them sleep. Before I cured myself of asthma, onions would greatly help my asthma attacks. So I have no doubt that this cough remedy is a winner.
This interesting natural cough remedy is also worth a try. You slather Vick’s vapor rub on the soles of your child’s feet and cover them with white socks. In no time they should be asleep!
